Smart Real-Time Charging Decisions for Electric Vehicles
Short introduction
My name is Shamim Mahmoudzadeh Vaziri, and I am in the second year of my master’s in Industrial Engineering, under the supervision of Professors Samira Keivanpour and Martin Trépanier. My thesis focuses on developing intelligent systems to improve the assignment of electric vehicles (EVs) to charging stations in real time. By using artificial intelligence and reinforcement learning, my research aims to guide EVs to the most suitable charging station, reducing travel and waiting times while improving the overall efficiency and user experience of EV charging systems.
What method did you use to explain your thesis in 3 minutes? I used a real-life example from Montreal during New Year’s Eve to illustrate the challenges EV users may face when trying to find an available charging station. By describing situations that people might experience in their daily lives, I highlight the difficulties caused by the limited number of charging stations and the increasing number of EV users. Then, I explain the gaps in current systems and present the focus of my research, which aims to develop smarter solutions to improve the charging experience.
How was your research topic inspired?
My research was inspired by the rapid growth of electric vehicles and the challenges that come with it. Governments around the world are investing heavily to encourage people to adopt EVs as a cleaner transportation option, but the challenges related to users’ real-world experience are often overlooked. I often hear from friends about the difficulties they face, such as the limited number of charging stations, long charging times, and waiting to find an available charger. These challenges motivated me to think about how research and advanced technologies can be connected to real-world applications. My goal is to develop smarter systems that help EV users find better charging options, reduce waiting and charging time, and improve overall user satisfaction.
If you could dedicate your research to someone (past, present, or future), who would it be and why? I would dedicate my research to all the girls around the world who want to show that they are capable of doing great things and making a meaningful impact, despite the challenges, limitations, and negative or oppressive opinions they may face every day. I would like them, and even myself, to remember that their power and potential should never be doubted. Let’s keep believing in ourselves, keep trying, and continue following our dreams.
