Smart Roller Design for In-Process Inspection in Automated Fiber Placement Using Piezoelectric Sensors

Popularized title of your research work
Application of Piezoelectric Sensors for Real-Time Defect Detection in Automated Fiber Placement

Short introduction
My name is Angelica Alexandra Porras Ayache, and I am a first-year Master’s student under the supervision of Professor Sampada Bodkhe. My research focuses on the implementation of piezoelectric sensors in compaction rollers used in Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) to identify defects related to the pressure applied along the roller during the manufacturing process.

What method did you use to explain your thesis in 3 minutes?
I explained my thesis using comparisons from daily life

How was your research topic inspired?
My research was inspired by the human ability to sense pressure through the skin. I wanted to create a system that could similarly ‘feel’ pressure changes during manufacturing to detect defects.

If you could dedicate your research to someone (past, present, or future), who would it be and why?
I would dedicate my research to all immigrants who have left their homeland to contribute and make an impact in research and innovation.

Three keywords to define your research work
Piezoelectric Sensors, Automated Fiber Placement, In-Process Inspection
