Long title of research paper
Additive manufacturing of a reconfigurable breast implant for minimally-invasive surgery using active materials
Popularized title of research paper
3D printed smart implants
Short presentation
My name is Srijani Basak and I am a first year PhD student in Mechanical Engineering, under the supervision of Professor Sampada Bodkhe. My thesis is focused on using 3D printing to develop implants capable of sensing and actuation.
What was your method for explaining your thesis in 3 minutes?
Introduce clinical need in invasive breast implant surgeries, explain how my research can help address it
How was your research topic inspired?
I started working on 3D printed smart implants during my Master's program. I expanded on this while exploring 3D printing of sensors and actuators during my PhD. A fall course I took, GBM6331E was also largely responsible for giving me ideas on this.
If you had to dedicate your research to someone from the past, present, or future, who would it be and why?
To all the women whose physical and psychological miseries get overlooked after breast surgeries.
3 keywords to define your research work
Additive manufacturing, active materials, breast implants
