Long title of research work
Investigating the Adversarial Robustness of Deep Multi-Sensor Fusion Models for Autonomous Vehicles.
Short title of research work
Investigation of the security of Autonomous vehicles
1) Short presentation
My name is Marwen Moslah, and I am in my third year of a PhD in Computer and Software Enginerring, under the supervision of Professor Gabriela Niclosecu and Doctor Ramzi Zouari. My thesis project is about improving the security of autonomous vehicles, particularly their sensor fusion paradigm, to mitigate the effect of adversarial attacks on these vehicle in order to pave the way for a fully secure autonomous driving vis-à-vis industry and society.
2) What was your method of explaining your thesis in 3 minutes?
My method of explaining my thesis is anchored by 3 pillars: identifying needs, vulgarize the methodology of developing the solution, and show the impact vis-à-vis the different stakeholders of the project.
3) What inspires you to do research?
Elon Musk inspired me to develop my research project. He started with ‘crazy ideas’ when he decided in 2012 to launch a spaceship that is able to go to the space and land on earth during its return without crushing. He unfortunately got 2 fails where at every launch, the spaceship exploded, until the third time, after 10 years, where he brilliantly scudded by being the pioneer in making this dream come true. In addition, Musk has the credit of making Tesla cars available to public, so he had a significant impact in democratizing the autonomous car technology. Inspired by his achievements as well as his perseverance, and as it is crucially important to secure the self-driving technology, I am doing my best via my PhD thesis project to pave the way for not only safe, but also secure self-driving technology.
4) If you have to dedicate your research to anyone in the past, present, or future, who would it be and why?
I will dedicate my research to Nicolas Tesla. As a matter of fact, Tesla's unconventional and avant-garde ideas led to skepticism and criticism from his peers and the public. Thus, he faced skepticism from investors and the scientific community. Nevertheless, even though he struggled from this skepticism, he succeeded thanks to his perseverance to create patents and great innovations that had a significant impact on humanity such as the wireless communications, Tesla motors, Tesla turbine, and Tesla coil which was used in radio technology, lighting, medical devices, and various other applications.
5) 3 key words to define your research
Autonomous cars, adversarial robustness, sensor fusion
