Generation of Bright Non-Classical Band Conditioned States of light

Short title of research paper

Quantum Optics is Simple, Just Think of a Kindergarten Class

1) Short presentation: First name, last name, program of study, supervisor, what is your research about

I’m Joseph Lamarre, second year master’s student in the department of Engineering Physics under the supervision of Professor Nicholas Godbout. My thesis has for objective to create an optical source generating novel bright quantum states of light using optical fiber components.

2) What was your method of explaining your thesis in 3 minutes?

I used the analogy of a kindergarten class to compare and contrast the behaviour and uses of classical light and quantum light as well as how the source I am building distinguishes itself from other quantum sources being researched.

3) What inspires you to do research?

The ability to manipulate the degrees of freedom unlocked by considering the quantum nature of light has the potential to revolutionize how we interact with optical technologies in our everyday life, from increased precision in biomedical imaging to faster and more secure communications network. However, current quantum sources have a serious flaw in that they are simply to dim for practical use. We propose a source that remedies this by being several million times brighter, and in doing so recasts our understanding of quantum optics.

4) If you have to dedicate your research to anyone in the past, present, or future, who would it be and why?

I would dedicate my research to our lab supervisor, Stéphane Virally. His vision, encouragements and incredible ability to teach stands as a beacon of hope and motivation in the tumultuous sea that is academia. His critical thinking keeps us grounded and sharp so that we may engender true innovation for the betterment of society.

5) 3 key words to define your research

Quantum Optics, Sensing, Metrology
