Mandatory workshops to get your project started. Undertaking a graduate research project involves many challenges. The objective of the mandatory complementary training workshops is to equip students in research programs by assisting them in undertaking and starting their project: identify the frontier of knowledge on the subject of research, define the hypothesis, the question or the objectives of the project, determine the originality and anticipate its impact, plan schedules, identify the necessary resources, establish strategies for scientific watch, etc. Each student will apply their learning to their own approach in order to progress effectively during the initial and determining stages of their research project undertaking.
Student choice workshops to enrich training. The development of competences that complement the research program is addressed in a series of workshops chosen by the student. These workshops cover subjects of general interest (communication, writing) or more specialized interest (entrepreneurship, intellectual property, teaching, etc.). A workshop that provides support and promotes reflection on the professional project is also offered. Students from all graduate study programs are eligible to sign up for the student choice series of workshops.
Reminder : Please be aware that attendance is mandatory for all CAP workshop sessions. Failure to attend will require you to participate in the workshop the following session.

DO YOU NEED HELP?

The following four workshops are mandatory for all persons enrolled in a doctoral program and should be successfully completed by the end of the 4th semester after the initial enrolment. Workshop CAP7003 must be attended during the first semester of enrolment.
- CAP7002E Master's in Engineering Research Strategies (1 cr.) (Workshop schedule)
- CAP7003E Doctoral research strategies in engineering (1 cr.) (Workshop schedule)
- CAP7005E Handling of scientific and technical information (1 cr.) (Workshop schedule)
- CAP7011E Creative approaches to research (1 cr.) (Workshop schedule)
- CAP7015E Leading a research project (1 cr.) (Workshop schedule) (CAP7015E aims to deepen the concepts seen in CAP7003E; it is strongly recommended to have completed CAP7003E before registering for CAP7015E.)
These workshops should be selected on the Graduate Study Form (Plan étude au 3e cycle) (.pdf), English version (.pdf) and attended in accordance with Graduate Studies' General Regulations (Règlements généraux des études supérieures), article 73.
Reminder : Please be aware that attendance is mandatory for all CAP workshop sessions. Failure to attend will require you to participate in the workshop the following session.
These one-credit, out-of-program workshops are available to students of all graduate programs (doctoral, master's and DESS). These workshops are not mandatory and do not replace the mandatory workshops of the research-based master's and doctoral programs. Attending these workshops does not exempt students from the obligation to attend the mandatory training of these programs.
See the section Student choice workshop schedule, in order to know which non-mandatory workshops are offered this semester.
Reminder : Please be aware that attendance is mandatory for all CAP workshop sessions. Failure to attend will require you to participate in the workshop the following session.

- CAPxxxx Le bien-être durant le parcours doctoral (1 cr.)
Each workshop is worth 1 credit, thus consisting of 15 hours of classes and 30 hours of personal work, and consists usually of 4 or 5 sessions. Successful completion of a workshop involves attending all the sessions and meeting the requirements of all the assignments. Grading is “Pass” or “Fail” type. The credit is “out-of-program” and is not counted in the credits required for receiving the diploma.
The workshops are subject to the same regulations as regular courses except where requests to drop courses are concerned. These must be addressed directly to the person in charge of the workshop or to Ateliers.CAP @polymtl.ca.
Recognition of workshops in the event of a change in program. “Students who change from a master's to a doctoral program are exempt from workshop CAP7003 or CAP7003E if they successfully completed workshops CAP7002 or CAP7002E in the master's program. Students who successfully completed workshop CAP7005 or CAP7005E in the master's program are exempt from this workshop in the doctoral program. Students who change from a doctoral to a master's program are exempt from workshop CAP7002 or CAP7002E if workshop CAP7003 or CAP7003E was successfully completed in the doctoral program. Students who successfully completed workshop CAP7005 or CAP7005E in the doctoral program are exempt from this workshop in the master's program. Students admitted before the Fall 2019 semester are exempt from workshop CAP7005 or CAP7005E in the doctoral program if the course ING6900 or ING6900E was successfully completed during the master's program.” (General regulations-Graduate studies, article 7.12.3)
Requirements for the comprehensive examination. “The 4 mandatory credits for the complementary doctoral training, “Toward the comprehensive examination”, should be successfully completed no later than the end of the 4th semester of study following the initial enrolment in the doctoral program (excluding any duly authorized interruptions in studies). If this requirement is not filled, the student transcript will bear the mention Authorized to pursue studies under conditions. If these 4 workshops are not successfully completed during the following semester, the student dossier will bear the mention No longer authorized to continue, which leads to cancellation of the candidacy.” (General regulations-Graduate studies, article 74.5). In this way, if students pass the comprehensive examination before the four CAP workshops are successfully completed, “Iv-incomplete” will be noted in their dossier for the comprehensive examination. The note will be replaced by “P-pass” when the four mandatory CAP workshops, as well as the comprehensive examination, have all been successfully completed. The regulation provides for only one extra semester to meet this requirement.
Reminder : Please be aware that attendance is mandatory for all CAP workshop sessions. Failure to attend will require you to participate in the workshop the following session.
