ADAM BENSOUDA: "Never doubt your abilities or potential for success."Will you be looking for work soon? For helpful tips, read this interview with Adam Bensouda, a recent graduate from the non-thesis master's program. He offers job-hunting insights for all graduate students heading into the job market. Can you briefly describe your academic background?
What challenges did you come up against during your job search?
What strategies worked for you?My first step was to rework my resume and make it more concise. I deleted the past experiences that were "decent" but not relevant to the type of position I was hoping to land. I analyzed job postings to see which soft skills and tools were in highest demand, and then added them to my resume. I did the same thing to my LinkedIn profile and subscribed to the Premium plan that lets you see more information about the skills needed for posted positions. I also completed some LinkedIn quizzes to earn skills badges. I think this gave me better visibility to recruiters and companies, though I could be wrong because I made several changes at the same time, so it's hard to know. To prepare for interviews in software engineering, I used several different sites, such as leetcode, algoexpert and hackerrank. You don't have to do everything, but it's very helpful to get used to the type of problems employers ask about. The idea was to think about which skills I had that were relevant for the position, and then to start preparing for technical interviews by working on problems and personal projects. That way I'd be ready when called for an interview. When I was contacted for interviews, I made a point of responding quickly and expressing my interest. I think it gave a good impression and helped us determine quickly if I was a good match for the position or not. Did you have any fears or doubts when looking for a job?Throughout the process, I was worried that I wouldn't find what I was looking for or not be good enough during interviews. It's important to remember that everyone starts somewhere and you'll meet all kinds of people. Some are friendly, some not so much. Some will want to make the interview unnecessarily difficult, and others will help boost your confidence. No matter what happens, keep a professional attitude and stay humble. And don't let a bad experience drag you down. Instead, use them as a learning experience to help you prepare for your next interview. Looking back, what would you do the same or differently? What advice would you give to students looking for a job?I started preparing for technical interviews while I was still a student. I'm speaking mostly for software engineering students. The questions I was given during interviews at Google and Meta, for example, were very different from the questions you learn to address at university or in the workplace. Also, a lot of companies use the same evaluation system. You can find some really interesting videos on YouTube of people who have gone through the process. Don't be afraid to apply for positions that ask for more qualifications or experience than what you have. Sometimes, the job posting is the employer's wish list, rather than a concrete requirement. Never doubt your abilities or potential for success. Aim high. No one will blame you for applying for a position you're not fully qualified for. Let the recruiters decide. In the worst-case scenario, you'll get the chance to practice interviewing. Out of all the companies I interviewed with, just two were actually good matches. I realized that interviews helped me see whether the work environment is healthy or not. Always have a Plan B in case your initial plan doesn't work out. This will prevent you from getting discouraged. If you're not offered a job, there's probably something better for you somewhere else. I hope that hearing about my experience was helpful. Best of luck with your studies and your job search! *** We wish you a successful end of semester! Please note that the Internships & Jobs service is open all summer. Stop by to see us!
