  1. Mes études sont très exigeantes, je n’ai pas le temps de faire autre chose;
  2. Mon objectif professionnel n’est pas clair et il se clarifiera de lui-même pendant mes études;
  3. Je veux attendre d’avoir des résultats de recherche avant de contacter les employeurs, pour que mon profil soit plus intéressant;
  4. L’entrée sur le marché du travail m’insécurise, je préfère ne pas y penser;

Got a post-Polytechnique game plan?

Waiting till the very end of your studies to think about your career?

Our team often hears these 5 fallacies from graduate students. Do any sound familiar to you?

  1. My program is super demanding, so I don't have time for anything else.
  2. I'm still not sure what kind of work I want to do, but my career path should clarify itself over time.
  3. I need to have definitive research findings before contacting employers because it will make my application stronger.
  4. Entering the workforce terrifies me, so it's best not to think about it for now.
  5. Research takes up most of my time, so it doesn't make sense to think about my career just yet.

Let's debunk these fallacies! Did you know?

  • Thinking ahead to life after Polytechnique doesn't need to be time-consuming. Give it just 15 minutes a week!
  • It's perfectly normal to feel unsure about what you want to do. Figuring it out is a process that will become clearer as you gain more experience. So don't wait until graduation to take action! :)
  • You can reach out to employers and professionals in your field as soon as you start your study program. By expressing interest, asking questions and demonstrating motivation, you're sure to catch their attention. After all, you're the future of science and engineering! Managers will be curious to meet you!
  • Get the ball rolling early and you'll find that things get clearer as you go. Doing the groundwork today will help reduce your stress tomorrow.

Where to begin?

  • Think about which courses and aspects of your studies are most interesting to you. These could point you toward career choices.
  • Consider your personal strengths. Which work tasks and responsibilities align with your abilities?
  • Take note of the various available positions and active companies in your field. This will help you get a better understanding of the market you'll be entering.
  • Don't be afraid to venture out of your comfort zone and seek out opportunities that will allow you to round out your skills and experience. Possibilities include teaching courses, supervising students completing internships or company projects, getting involved with your student association, etc.
  • Start networking! It just takes a few minutes a week. Every month, add a few people to your LinkedIn contacts, read the profiles of professionals in your field, and post the occasional study, news article or job offer. You'll gradually build a network of people who can keep you informed of opportunities and help you get your career off the ground.
