If you have a PhD, can you apply for jobs that only require a bachelor's degree?

Absolutely. You can definitely apply. Here are a few tips on how to make sure your application gets noticed:

1. Understand the meaning of "minimum requirement”

When an employer lists a bachelor's degree as a requirement, they usually mean it’s the minimum level of education required, not the maximum. So if you’ve got a higher-level degree, you can go ahead and apply as long as your profile matches the job posting.

2. Make your application relevant

The employer wants to see that you’ve got the required skills and a solid understanding of what the job entails in terms of tasks and responsibilities. If your PhD studies and research allowed you to develop transferable skills (like project management or leadership) and cross-disciplinary skills (like adaptability, problem-solving, ethics or priority management), don’t be shy to say so. Let them know what you’ve got to offer!

3. Tailor your application

Your resumé should be succinct and relevant. In two pages, present whatever past experience you’ve gained and projects you’ve completed that relate to the position you’re applying for—even if it was part of your research. Enclose a cover letter that explains why you’re interested in the position and clearly connects it to your skills, education and experience. This will signal to the employer that you understand what’s expected.

Pro tip: Make it clear that you’re genuinely interested in the position and not just hoping to get your foot in the door. That way, they’ll be less likely to worry that the position is “below you” because of your qualifications.

4. Anticipate concerns about being overqualified

Some employers may be reluctant to hire an “overqualified” candidate (Bangali and Guillemette, 2021). To reassure them, be emphatic about the fact that you’re interested in the position and the company.

In sum, you should focus on positions that you’re genuinely interested in and suitable for. Then tailor your resumé and cover letter to reflect the wording used by the employer.
