15 key questions to ask your research supervisor about professional development

In a previous article, we discussed how to talk to your research supervisor about professional development. When you finally sit down to chat with your supervisor or another faculty member, it can be hard to know what to say. Here's some inspiration on questions you can ask during your meeting. Read them over to see which ones are most appropriate for the person you'll be talking to:

  1. In your view, what career options do you see for someone with my education, skills and interests?
  2. How can I align my research interests with the lab's goals?
  3. Are you aware of any specific research projects I could work on in order to gain skills and experience?

  4. What should I do to advance in my chosen field?
  5. What kind of research, collaboration or internship opportunities could help me achieve my professional goals?
  6. What technical or non-technical skills should I improve on?

  7. What conferences, workshops or seminars should I attend to enhance my skills and grow my network?
  8. What resources are available at Polytechnique or elsewhere that might be able to help me with professional development?
  9. Can you share insights about any funding options or scholarships that I could look into?

  10. Can you provide me with regular feedback on my progress and let me know how I could improve my skills?
  11. Can you introduce me to colleagues who could act as mentors or offer me opportunities to collaborate?
  12. What groups or professional associations should I follow or join to expand my network?

  13. Are there any current or potential collaboration opportunities that I could participate in?
  14. In your view, what is the biggest advantage of having a research background when entering the workforce?
  15. What advice do you have for balancing my master's or PhD studies, professional development and personal life?
