1) Short presentation
I am Akram Refaei a Ph.D. student in the Electrical Engineering Department at Polytechnique Montreal. I have graduated from University of Science and Technology at Zewail City, Egypt. I am working on Radio Frequency Energy Harvesting. Basically, we try to harvest energy from the radio signals around.
2) What was your method for explaining your thesis in 3 minutes?
I am trying to simplify things as much as I can to engage people to understand what I am talking about. I am relating my research to people’s daily life and experience. Also, I am highlighting the human part of the technology I am developing. I wanted to give a closer look on how I spend my day. Moreover, I want people to know how the change my research would do in their everyday life.
3) How was your research topic inspired?
People don’t want to use chargers or wires. They think it is something from the past. The charging time is so boring and wasty. Nowadays, we want to stay connected all the time and we become more and more dependent on our smart devices. Powering everything wirelessly, is so helpful.
4) If you had to dedicate your research to someone from the past, present or future, who would it be and why?
I dedicate my work to Nicola Tesla who was the first one to invent wireless power transfer. Although his work is different from what I am doing. I still see him as a inspirational character.
